Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a standing committee at Carroll College that oversees the College’s animal care and use program. The Committee's composition and responsibilities regarding animal research are mandated by the Animal Welfare Act (Public Law 99-198). The committee ensures the appropriate care, use and humane treatment of animals used for research, testing and teaching. The responsibilities of the IACUC include reviewing and approving requests to use live vertebrate animals, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, and investigating animal welfare concerns. The IACUC performs inspections of all areas where animals are housed and used. The IACUC serves as a resource to investigators, research staff, students and administrators, by providing guidance in planning and conducting research.

As a student, faculty or staff member of Carroll College, if you are doing research (including class projects and theses) that involves collecting information or data about animal subjects, or testing/measuring animal participants in any way, you need to know the following:

• You must have Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval before you begin.
• If you do not have IACUC approval for your research, your research project cannot be recognized by Carroll and will not be accepted to fulfill any academic requirements.
• The IACUC cannot review research that has already been conducted.
• The IACUC review must be conducted before you involve animal participants in your research or project.
