3-2 Engineering, Major in Engineering Mathematics, B.A.
The purpose of the 3-2 program is to provide the student with the opportunity to combine a strong liberal arts education with a traditional engineering education.
A student who completes the requirements for the 3-2 Engineering Major in Engineering Mathematics earns two degrees:
- A Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Engineering Mathematics from Carroll College, and
- A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in a selected field of engineering (e.g., mechanical engineering) from an ABET-accredited program at another institution.
Under the 3-2 program, a student attends Carroll College for three years and then transfers to an ABET-accredited engineering program. Upon successful matriculation in their chosen engineering degree plan, the student contacts the Registrar’s office at Carroll College and is awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in engineering mathematics from Carroll College. Formal written agreements exist with the University of Notre Dame (South Bend, IN) and Columbia University (New York City, NY). The University of Notre Dame recommends a 3.6 GPA at the time of transfer and accepts 20 students nationally into their program. Columbia University recommends a 3.0 GPA. Other requirements are also in effect at each institution so prospective students should consult with the 3-2 engineering adviser before they begin their first semester at Carroll. Neither of these institutions guarantee admittance, but the formal agreements give Carroll students meeting the respective institutions’ requirements priority in the admission process of students from liberal arts institutions.
The Carroll College 3-2 engineering advisor will work with students entering Montana State University, Montana Technological University (Montana Tech), or another institution of the student’s choosing to design a program that will allow the student to progress towards matriculation at that institution in an effective manner. As engineering curriculums can vary both within a specific institution and between institutions, prospective students should consult with the 3-2 engineering advisor before they begin their first semester at Carroll.
A program to prepare students for graduate studies in engineering is offered via the mathematics major with a cognate concentration in engineering.

Five courses of three or four credits each, selected on the basis of the engineering field of interest and with approval of the 3-2 engineering advisor. Technical elective courses are generally selected from 300 and 400 level engineering courses but can also include courses in biology, chemistry, computer science, and physics.

III. Carroll College Core Curriculum
To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carroll College a student must complete the Carroll College Core Curriculum as listed in this catalog. However, since these requirements must be completed within three years, the following adjustments have been approved for 3-2 engineering students:
- Central Sequence requirements: the Advanced Writing course will be waived at Carroll, and an equivalent requirement will be completed at the ABET-accredited engineering institution;
- Distribution requirements: one course (3 credits) within the Faith & Reason distribution requirement will be waived. In other words, students must complete the Theological Foundations course (3 credits theology), Philosophical Reasoning course (3 credits philosophy) and the Ethical Reasoning course (3 credits of either philosophy or theology) within the Central Sequence of the Core Curriculum 2020;
- Sed Vitae requirement: the Sed Vitae experiential requirement will be waived at Carroll, and an equivalent requirement will be completed at the ABET-accredited engineering institution.
IV. Additional Requirements
- All 3-2 students must complete the 3-2 intention form by the end of their third semester. This form will document: (i)the institution they are intending to transfer to, (ii) the engineering discipline they are planning to pursue, and (iii) a list of appropriate courses to be taken at Carroll. This document may be altered in consultation with the 3-2 advisor as the student further develops their educational goals.
- As students are to transfer to another institution, a student must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses listed under “Major Program Requirements” and “Other Program Requirements.” (In general Carroll engineering, math, and science courses require a C- as a passing grade. However, since not all institutions will accept a C- grade as a transfer equivalent, 3-2 students are held to the higher standard of a C.)
- The requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in engineering mathematics under the 3-2 program differ from those for the four-year mathematics majors. Students in the 3-2 engineering major are not required to fulfill the requirements for the four-year mathematics major.
- The requirements listed in sections I, II, and III above must be completed before transferring to an affiliated engineering school and cannot be satisfied by credits earned at the engineering school after the student has transferred.
- Students transferring to Carroll College and entering the 3-2 program must complete at least two full-time semesters at Carroll College before they will be considered for a recommendation to transfer to an affiliated school. In addition, these students must complete a minimum of eighteen credits in the Department of Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science at Carroll College. Credits transferred to Carroll do not satisfy this requirement.
- The minimum GPA of the second institution in the courses listed under the “Major Program Requirements” and in the “Other Program Requirements”, as a unit, must be achieved by the end of the fifth semester at Carroll College.
- Some affiliate school programs may also require the completion of a summer field or laboratory course for graduation in that department. In rare cases, additional course work may be required to satisfy a specialized engineering curriculum. These are requirements that apply to all students entering these programs and must also be satisfied by 3-2 students. Students in 3-2 engineering must consult with 3-2 engineering advisor at Carroll College to select a school and field of study for which they qualify.
