I. Minor Program Requirements
25 total credits required to complete the Minor
Assessment and Prerequisite Requirements
Applicants for the Music Minor are required to perform one selection that demonstrates previous training in their instrument or voice type (participation in band, orchestra or choir are acceptable forms of previous training). Applicants for the Music Minor are required to complete a brief assessment of their music theory knowledge and must complete a brief interview with the music faculty.
Student Learning Outcomes
These are the educational outcomes of Music studies at Carroll College

Students will display an understanding of the foundational theories of music and styles, in both analysis and musicianship.

Students will display an understanding of music and literature from a variety of cultures and time periods, from ancient to modern, and of the social and artistic movements therein.

Students will exhibit the ability to analyze and interpret texts and performances both in written and verbal critiques.

Students will exhibit the skills necessary for success in the performing arts as well as employment. This includes specifically: collaboration, interpersonal communication, performance techniques, and entrepreneurship.

Students develop and apply these skills and knowledge in the multiple settings of rehearsals, concerts, productions and classrooms. Students will also display effective and efficient knowledge of leadership and organizational practices in the performing arts.

Students will demonstrate proficiency in one or more areas of concentration with skills specific to: Applied Music, Sacred Music, or Musical Theatre.
Required Courses
16 credits
Note: MUS 475 may be taken for 1-3 credits per term. This course must be repeated to complete a minimum of 4 credits.
Performance Elective Courses
Applied Music Minor
- All required courses for the Music Minor (16 cr)
- At least three Performance Elective Courses (3 cr)
- Six additional MUS credits (may be 2 electives or a combination of an elective, applied music, and ensembles)
Music Minor with Emphasis in Musical Theatre
- All required courses for the Music Minor (16 credits)
- Additional courses:
- THT 209 Intro to Musical Theatre (3 cr)
- THT 312 Musical Theatre Performance (3 cr)
- Either THT 130 Dance I or THT 131 Dance II (Must take one dance class) (1 cr)
- Must participate in at least 2 Musicals THT 110 (2 cr)
Music Minor with Emphasis in Sacred Music
- All required courses for the Music Minor (16 Credits)
- Additional courses:
- MUS 250 Development of Sacred Music in the West (3 cr)
- MUS 252 Practical Application of Sacred Music in the Modern Church (3 cr)
- At least one Carroll Performance Elective (1 cr)
- Two credits of MUS 425 Internship - singing/playing/internship with any approved church music group in Helena. (2 cr) (strongly encouraged to be taken 2 different semesters)
Other Program Requirements
- No class may meet more than one requirement even if in more than one category. A student must receive at least a C- in a class for it to count towards the minor.
- A maximum of six credit hours in applied music and performance ensembles may be applied toward the Minor in Music.
