Mission and Goals

 

The Department of Business offers Bachelor of Arts degrees with majors in Accounting & Strategic Finance, Financial Planning, or Business: Management & Marketing. Business: Management & Marketing majors may add a concentration in International Business. Minors are available in Accounting, Business Administration, or Marketing. Students may also earn a Entrepreneurship Certificate. Students may combine majors, minors and concentrations.

The Business Department's mission is consistent with Carroll College's dual goals of vocation and enlightenment and prepares students for graduate school or entry into the workforce. Framed by a strong foundation in liberal arts education, the mission of the Business Department is to provide students with the strong ethical foundation and globally informed knowledge and skills necessary for today's dynamic professional environment.

Students completing the Accounting and Financial Planning majors are prepared for professional certification exams. 

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the requirements, students with an major in Accounting & Strategic Finance will:

  • Be able to describe the various standard setting bodies and the implications of standard changes for the financial markets.
  • Demonstrate the ability to become life-long learners by researching accounting, tax, and audit related issues.
  • Develop an understanding of accounting related careers such as auditing, tax, management and government accounting.
  • Be able to prepare financial statements and discuss the theory underlying the accounting treatment.
  • Utilize skills to analyze past performance of an entity and develop future projections from the financial statements.
  • Demonstrate preparedness for entry into an accounting related career, continuation of studies in graduate school, or professional exams such as the CPA or CMA exam.
