TH 218 Spiritual Autobiographies

Faith & Reason- Theology. Over the course of Christian history, significant individuals have shared their personal journeys to and with God through the genre of spiritual autobiography. This course will explore this genre by reading such classics as St. Augustine of HIppo's Confessions, St. Teresa of Avila's The Life of Theresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux's A Story of a Soul, as well as more contemporary texts such as Thomas Merton's Seven Storey Mountain and Howard Thurman's With Hand and Heart.Through rigorous study of these classic and contemporary texts, students will explore and critically engage the theologies, christologies, ecclesiologies, and spiritualities of these significant individuals in their historical and ecclesial contexts, will develop appreciation for the spiritual journeys of others, and will discern and articulate their own spiritual journeys.
