English Education (5-12), B.A.
The English Education (5–12) major prepares students to teach English language arts in middle and high school settings. The program emphasizes strong content knowledge in literature, writing, language, and media, along with research-based pedagogical skills for effective instruction and assessment. Coursework and field experiences focus on helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to engage diverse learners in reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication. Program outcomes align with the Montana Professional Educator Preparation Program Standards for English Language Arts Teachers (ARM 10.58.509)
I. Major Program Requirements

Seven upper-division literature courses:
a. Two upper-division (300-400 level) courses from these periods of United States Literature:
Early U.S. Literature
19th Century U.S. Literature
20th Century U.S. Literature
b. Two upper-division (300-400 level) courses from these periods of British Literature:
Medieval
Renaissance
Restoration and 18th Century British
19th Century British
20th Century British
c. One upper-division (300-400 level) course in Global Literature
d. Native American Authors
e. Young Adult Literature
The department strongly encourages majors to take one literature course in a language other than English.
One additional course in English language and theory:

- All English Education (5-12) students must meet the following requirements: 1) earn a grade of “C-” or better in all Professional Education Requirements, Major Program Requirements, and Other Program Requirements; 2) earn a minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average for Admission to the Teacher Education Program; 3) earn a minimum 3.0 grade point average in Major Program Requirements, Other Program Requirements and Professional Education Requirements for Acceptance to Student Teaching.
